July 2012
Dear Members
It is timely for another newsletter to update you on the comings and goings of our club.
First of all with sadness we remember the passing of Peter Lenihan, Margaret Dawson & Dorothy Boyde. These members will be sadly missed.
We welcome to our club 16 new members who have “graduated” from Learners class. A reminder to all on how we felt on this auspicious occasion as we make them feel comfortable in the club surroundings.

August 12th : Lindsay Trophy. This tournament is our annual get together with the Gore Club. Each year this is held at an alternate venue and this year is our turn to host Gore. Play starts 1pm and each Invercargill member is to bring a plate. It would be preferable if a sweet & savoury was brought from each pair. There are no table fees on the day. Names can be entered in the foyer.
August 25th: SBS Invercargill Pairs. This is open to all club members as Intermediate can play in the Open section. Names can be entered in the foyer.

Results to be scored on a handicap basis. These results will not affect your overall %. The division of each section to be sorted the series prior to enable you to organise your partner.
Bar Manager
Grant Milne is taking over the role of Bar Manager, a huge thanks to John Clarke for his dedication at looking after the bar over the past few years.
Slow Play: Thanks to all members for your efforts in reducing the unnecessary hold ups we have been plagued with in the past. Remember the most important role if you are sitting West is to move to the next table as soon as the bell goes & not to review the scores. A big thank you to the directors for keeping us all on track. Committee members are also required to back up the Director.
Scores – It is very hard to get scores 100% correct on the night when information provided by members is incorrect or positions changed on the backing sheet. The end result is only as good as the data provided to input. Convenors please make sure all results are to the computer operator and be on hand for any checking etc. If any members are interested in learning how to do the scoring for next year, please let Jan Brown know.
Sponsors
It is timely to thank our sponsors again for their contribution to our tournaments though out the year. As we continue to support them they are happy to continue to support us.
Our 2012 Sponsors are: ILT, Bowmont Meats, Office Max, Foveaux Communications, SBS, Toyworld.

A dear old lady found herself playing in a teams match against two very famous Grand Masters. Her partner was also a distinguished Grand Master. Feeling considerably outclassed, she spent the entire match praying for 4-3-3-3 yarboroughs (that is, a hand with no card higher than a 9), so that she would not have to make any decisions and could not be criticised in front of the kibitzers for getting a decision wrong. She also worked very hard in the bidding to try to ensure that her famous partner played all the hands. She had been reasonably successful with her 'relay' system until this monster came along:
AKQ – A6 – KQJ10 9 8 - AK
She and her partner were playing Benjamin Twos and in this method she had an automatic 2 Diamond opening which promises a hand of 23 points or more, or at least enough for game in one's own hand. However, she figured that if she did open 2 Diamonds, it was highly likely that the final contract could be 5, 6 or even 7 Diamonds and then she would have to play the hand.
Therefore she rejected the 2 Diamond opening and instead opened 2 Clubs which showed around 20-22 points, about 8-9 playing tricks. This clever ploy was in anticipation of her partner bidding the 2 Diamond negative reply, in which case he would end up as declarer if the final contract happened to be in diamonds.
However, the contract turned out to be 6 Spades, played by her partner of course, and after the lead was made and she tabled this gigantic dummy, the Grand Master on her right stared at dummy goggle-eyed and exclaimed : 'Good grief! That's the biggest eight-playing trick hand I have ever seen. What do you need to open with 2 Diamonds?' Her reply : 'Weaker opponents.'
April 2012 Newsletter
Dear Members
We are a third of the way through the year and timely to distribute another newsletter.
Upcoming Events
April 28th & 29th is the ILT Murihiku Teams & Pairs events. A two-day tournament and entries close April 24th. This is open to all grades and a huge thanks to the many workers who will be assisting in the running of this event.
May 20th: Alliance tournament with the start time at 1pm. Note all sponsored afternoon tournaments start at 1pm and evening tournaments start at 7.30pm. Please put your name up in the foyer and anyone needing a partner we will find you one.
July 1st Guy Swiss Pairs: For the new members of the club this is a great event. Everyone is seeded and you start by playing a set of 6 boards against your opponents. After they are scored everyone moves up or down in the room and meet their next opponents and the same thing will happen. At the end of the day there are winners in 3 sections and even if you finish 10th in the room you may be the winners of your section. This is a very relaxed day where we all bring our own lunch and a minimal cost of $10 is required.
Club Teams
The Otago / Southland interclub teams are on the 6th May to find the team to represent Southland/Otago at the National congress in September. The following are representing Invercargill:
Open Intermediate Junior
Bruce Batchelor Bob Atley Christine Dallas
Greg Buzzard Kerry Cartwright Grant Milne
Harry Shepherd Robyn Reidie Lee Davies
Tony Winders Sue Scott Sue Whelan
Reserve: Jan Brown
Names & NZCBA Number
When putting your name and number on the sheet please make sure you are putting your name & numbers clearly and correctly with the table number and board number you start with. This makes the job of the computer operator a lot easier and quicker, and less chance of mistakes being made. We are using the NZBA scorer programme in conjunction with Max’s programme, running the two systems side by side, Jan Brown is doing a great job facilitating this transition and we need to ensure the best of Max’s programme is available in the new system before the transfer takes place.
LEARNERS CLASS 2012
We have a large class this year and thanks to Jill McMeeking with the assistance of John Burgess, Doug Harrington & Bob Atley for their weekly commitment to this class.
The following change in bidding procedure has been introduced this year:
No Trump Rebids
In the fifth edition of Paul Marston’s ‘Introduction to Bridge’ a minimum rebid of 1NT is 15 – 17 HCP. A rebid of 2NT is 18-19 HCP.
According to the author this represents a big improvement to the Acol system. It is right from a theoretical point of view and it is easier to learn. The NZ Bridge notes on learning bridge also advocate this part of the NT rebid structure.
This year’s Learners’ class is being taught this feature of the system so if you are still playing the previous version you need to be aware of this. It does not have to be alerted.
Hiring of Rooms – Please note as we are not a registered commercial kitchen the kitchen is unable to be hired out for the making of cheese rolls etc. Huge thanks to Kay McMillan for looking after room hire over the last few years. She is no longer doing this but still assisting with dealing of cards and banking of $$. Sue Scott is the new contact for room hire enquiries.

Some Pearls of Wisdom
People with small minds talk about other people. People with ordinary
minds talk about events. People with great minds talk about ideas. People with warped minds talk about bridge hands.
We had a partnership misunderstanding. My partner assumed I knew what I was doing.
You know you're in trouble when the first thing the opponents decide
to do is draw trumps, and you're the declarer.
Bridge is a great comfort in your old age.
It also helps you get there faster.

Welcome Back - Happy New Year
Hello everyone. For those of you who haven’t participated in Holiday Bridge – welcome back to the bridge table! We hope you have had a restful break and are ready for another great year of enjoyable cards.
Congratulations!
Firstly – congratulations to all prize winners from 2011. We have no promotions in 2012 as those that met the criteria have opted to stay in Silver Reserve with a handicap.
Secondly – congratulations to Yvonne Hughes for winning the Holiday Bridge. This competition was held over 11 weeks. We had 111 members playing at least once during this period with visitors from the UK & Canada.
Thursday night competitions
Entry sheets for the following competitions are posted on the foyer noticeboard.
* Mixed Pairs: Starts 9 February 2012. The competition will be run over 11 nights. Each pair is to have one Silver & one Silver Reserve player. The same pair must play 9 nights of the eleven to qualify and scores with substitutes will not count. Handicaps will apply.
So find a partner or just enter your name on the list and Lee or John will match you up.
* Teams: Starts 16 February 2012. Entry forms are in the foyer.
There will be 3 levels of competition: Championship, Reserve & Junior. The format will be determined by the number of entries in each division.
* Mixed Teams: Starts 23 February 2012. Enter your names in the foyer and teams will be assigned by the match committee to ensure a tightly contested competition. No handicaps will apply.
These are all great competitions to be involved with. They are a great mix of all players from each division and a chance for the Junior players to learn more skills from the senior players. So if you have not played on this night in previous years come and join the fun.
Learners Classes – February 21st 7pm
We are keen to have a good attendance at these classes so ask your neighbours, work colleagues or friends. If any interest enter their details on the list in the foyer or pass the info to Jill McMeeking. We all know what a great game Bridge is – share the pleasure!
Charity Tournament – February 25th 7.30pm
This year’s Charity is to be Southland Conductive Education Trust. This is a centre for children with Motor Disorder. They are a parent driven non-profit organisation providing programmes for children with physical disabilities and developmental delay to encourage independence & wellbeing. The cost for this tournament is $10 per person plus a plate for supper and donations for raffles. Lets get behind this great charity and show our support.
Interclub Teams
The Interclub team competition is to be held in Dunedin on May 6th. We need to select an open, intermediate and junior team so if you wish to be considered for a team please put your name on the list in the foyer by March 16th. The winners of the interclub competition represent Southland/Otago in Hamilton at Congress in September.
Handicap System explained
Handicaps for each member are calculated thus: for each % figure above or below 50% half a % is deducted or added. The starting handicap for a Silver player is scratch and for Silver Reserve +5. Handicaps are updated after each pairs night, New players from the learners’ class are assigned a fixed handicap of 15 until the end of the year. On the computer printout of players’s averages, which is in the foyer, each individual’s handicap is shown as half.
Your combined handicap with your partner gives you your total handicap for the night.
Last Series of the Year: Silver-Enwood & SR-Pam Bower
As a way of encouraging the senior players in each division to play with the junior players within the division this series is to be split into two sections based on the average % where each pair is to contain a member of each section. Results to be scored on a handicap basis. These results will not affect your overall %. The division of each section to be sorted the series prior to enable you to organise your partner.
Defibrillator
ILT has funded the purchase of a defibrillator. Training was completed in December. The machine is to be located in the kitchen by the phone with the list of trained members.
Start Times
Just a friendly reminder to all that players are required to be here and seated 5 mins prior to the start of play. This allows time for the Director to facilitate table movements and for play to commence on time.
Don’t forget your Committee is here to help. If you have any queries or concerns don’t hesitate to contact any of us who are listed in the front of the programme book.
New Years Resolutions:
If you would like to be a desirable bridge partner – Don’t say anything to your partner unless you want him/her to say the same to you. Always remember you and your partner are on the same side. Remember bridge is just a card game and last but not least have a good time.
Good bridging everyone.

September 2011
Dear Members
Spring has sprung and daylight saving is here so we hope there are lots of long warm summer evenings ahead.
We had a great get together with the Gore Club last weekend when we competed for the Lindsay Trophy. The final result was very close as we managed to keep hold of the trophy for another year and we look forward to hosting the Gore members 2012.
The Rugby World Cup festivities have passed through Invercargill and our facilities were a fantastic venue for the volunteers during the 10 day event. We received huge plaudits for our venue and hopefully we may gain some new members as many who were here never realised what an asset we do have. Thanks to you all for putting up with any minor disruptions during this period.
Upcoming events
Quiz Night Wednesday 28th September – Not to late to get a team together to support this Club fundraiser. Lots of great prizes and raffles available for all. Further donations are still appreciated for raffles.

This night has been allocated to the Championship teams to enable a full round robin of this competition.
Babich NZ Wide Pairs Friday November 4th – Invercargill are hosting this event this year so names can be entered closer to the time.

ILT Sponsored Tournament Saturday 19th November.
Christmas Prizegiving & Breakup Sunday 11th December 1.30pm.
This afternoon will commence with a game of bridge at 1.30 followed by prizegiving at appox 4.30 followed by a pot luck Tea.
Start Times:
Thursday evenings are to remain at 7.25 as these evening tend to finish quite early no matter what competition is being held. Monday & Tuesday start times remain at 7.10 as a trial until the end of the year. The break for a cuppa and a bikkie appears to be working well in both divisions as the noise levels increase considerably during this time. We intend to have a survey available in November to seek your input into the retention or otherwise of this start time for 2012. The new committee will consider the results at its first meeting on 23rd November.
Sponsors
It is timely to thank our sponsors again for their contribution to our tournaments though out the year. As we continue to support them they are happy to continue to support us.

A Little LAUGH
Why did you lead the nine from K-9-7-5-2?
I play fourth best.
Then why not the five?
Darn! I always forget which end to count from.
A bumbling bridge player explained to his regular partner how he planned to improve his game: “Every night when I go to bed I think about the mistakes I made that day at the bridge table.”
“Gee,” his partner said, “how do you get any sleep?”

First of all with sadness we remember the passing of Guy Bouton & David Fraser. David had a very long association with the club and was one of the initial debenture holders. Any member of the club may contact the recorder to help them decide whether to take an incident to formal appeal or just to report a concern about another member’s behaviour (at or away from the table). Communications with a recorder remain strictly confidential to that person alone. Invercargill’s bridge recorder is currently Ken Smith Ph 217 6252
Rugby World Cup
We are currently in negotiations with the RWC organisors for the hire of the bridge rooms for the week of the Invercargill world cup rugby games. There may need to be rescheduling of some sessions during that week but notification of any changes will be made as soon as this is finalised.
Thank you Moss
Your Monday night lessons have been very appreciated by all who attended. Future lessons will be noted on the white board and they are open to all members.

Birthdays
The club like to acknowledge the milestones of 80th or 90th birthdays. We can only acknowledge these milestones if we are aware of them so please keep the committee informed of any up and coming celebrations.
A little laugh
Put 4 bridge players on the table and you’ll get 4 different opinions.
We had a partnership misunderstanding. My partner assumed I knew what I was doing.
I never drink alcohol while playing bridge. It interferes with my suffering.
The brain is a wonderful organ. It starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you sit at the bridge table.
Giving a man his physical, the doctor noticed several dark, ugly bruises on his shins, so he asked, "Do you play hockey, soccer, or some physical sport?"
"No," he answered. "I play bridge with my wife."
Happy and a safe Easter everyone

Rugby World Cup
The contract with Rugby World Cup officials is about to be signed for the hire of our clubrooms during the Southland event. The club will be used by the RWC from September 7th to September 19th. During this period they will have the use of the Harvey Kitto room, Committee room and the Kitchen. The only disruption to our bridge players will be Wednesday 14th as this is a RWC game day. The match committee is arranging an alternate day for this interruption.
Thank you
Moss
Your Monday night lessons are appreciated by all who attend.
Lee Davies has organised the use of 3 walkers for our members. They are stored in
the Ladies Cloakroom and are available for anyone to use. Thank you Lee.
Wednesday Bridge
Numbers are such that a Wednesday competition is not economically viable for the club. If the afternoon is to continue with such low numbers the Committee room should be used for the venue instead of the full room. For your information the last power bill for the club was $1300.00 If anyone is interested in playing on Wednesday afternoon please contact the convenor as listed in the programme book. It is a great way to fill in a cold winters afternoon.
Youth Bridge
Jono Batchelor & Vicky Bouton attended the Youth Bridge weekend in Auckland recently. They have both come back very enthusiastic about what they learnt about the game while in Auckland. Approximately 30 youth from around the country attended the weekend.
Sponsors
It is timely to thank our sponsors again for their contribution to our tournaments though out the year. As we continue to support them they are happy to continue to support us.
Our 2011 Sponsors are: ILT, Air NZ, Bowmont Meats, Office Max, Foveaux Communications, Powernet, SBS.
Bar Manager
John Clarke has indicated he is ready to pass on the Bar manager duties at the end of the year. If you are interested in this position have a yarn to John to see what this entails.
A Little LAUGH
A fellow had made a bad bid and gone for 1400.
“I'm sorry,” he said to his partner, “I had a card misplaced.”
Asked his partner innocently, “Only one card?”
A doctor, concerned about the physical condition of one of his bridge-playing patients, during a regular check-up asked,
“Do you get much exercise?”
“Only when I sit East/West”
Did You Know?
43.6 percent of all slam contracts fail.
62.7 percent of all bridge players are women.
97.8 percent of all bridge statistics, including these, are made up.
